About The Pawn

You wake up in the middle of an unknown forest. You don't know where you are, you don't know how you got there, and a cuff is sitting on your wrist—one that definitely shouldn't be there and refuses to come off. 1986, text adventure, Rainbird Software — and the feeling that this is going to be different from your typical "pick up key, open door" affair.

The Pawn throws you into a fantasy world called Kernovia. You are a pawn — literally, as the title suggests — someone who has no business being in this land and wants out. But leaving isn't that simple. Kernovia has its inhabitants, its problems, and its strange laws, and you're tangled up in it all deeper than it first appears. A pure text adventure in genre, no graphics, no status bars, just a parser and your patience.

The Pawn's parser was exceptionally tolerant for its time. It understood more natural sentences than the competition and didn't mind a bit of context. You'd type something like "give the leaflet to the man" and the game would understand, rather than scolding you for using the wrong verb. That was quite a step forward back then. On the other hand — the puzzles are sometimes devious in a way that feels more arbitrary than clever by today's standards. Kernovia doesn't play fair, and not every solution can be deduced by logic. A few puzzles rely purely on the designer's imagination, not yours.

What The Pawn brought and what I remember from it is atmosphere. Kernovia isn't generic fantasy — it has character, an ironic tone at times, NPCs with opinions and troubles just as absurd as your cuff problem. Rainbird knew back then how to write a world you want to inhabit, not just walk through. Technically, the game has aged the way text adventures age — which is to say, quite well, since the engine is language itself and that doesn't age much.

Today The Pawn suits anyone who loves parser adventures and won't mind dipping into a period hint guide now and then. It's a piece from when text adventure was a full-fledged genre, not a curiosity. Play it in your browser with no installation or configuration needed — and your first twenty minutes in Kernovia will show you why this summer of the 80s deserves more than just a nostalgic sigh.
