Night Stalker

A guy in a black coat crawls out of the darkness and you shoot. You shoot and shoot, because going into the dark means death. Night Stalker is what happens when a simple idea meets bland execution.

It's an action arcade game from 1983 for IBM PC and compatible computers. You explore a dark room that gradually lights up around your character. Enemies appear from all sides — sometimes from the corners, sometimes rolling out of walls like something unwanted. You shoot them, collect points, move on to the next level. That's it. No story, no flourishes.

The mechanics are straightforward. Arrow keys to move, spacebar to shoot. The game doesn't believe in itself — the shooting is slow, characters move like pressed figurines, effects are minimal. The graphics are primitive, even outdated for the nineties. The sound is one tone repeating. What makes playing painful is precisely this absence of anything that would make you want to continue. Missing is rhythm, missing is progress, missing is anything you could grab onto. The levels feel like one another.

This game isn't bad because it's too difficult or weirdly controlled — it's bad because it's boring. Being an action arcade on a computer in 1983 was itself a trick that could have worked, but Night Stalker doesn't make anything of this opportunity. You don't feel like you're improving, that you're learning. You're there, you shoot, you die, you repeat.

You can play it today in an emulator if you have some time and want to feel what mediocrity looked like in early computer games. It's not a disaster, but it's not fun either. It's like looking at a math test — functionally correct, but with no reason to exist.
