About Midwinter

When you first boot up Midwinter, you hear a British voice dumping information about catastrophe, an ice age, and humanity's last outpost. Then you're alone with your band of survivors on a frozen island, and you have to decide whether you'll explore, hunt, or venture into ice caves full of the unknown.

It's a unique blend of exploratory RPG and survival simulator from 1990. You're not some superhero who'll carve a path through the world with a sword. You're a person trying to stay alive, endure freezing nights, and find food. Midwinter lets you manage a group of characters you need to monitor, command, and sometimes watch die. Survival isn't automatic — weather changes, you get energy from food and rest, and if you botch a complex expedition, people can freeze to death.

You play from an overhead perspective, like you've zoomed out on a map. The controls aren't intuitive — this game is more strategic and slow-paced, your team trudging through a lumbering landscape, interacting with objects, gathering resources. It's not action-packed fun. It's a slog where you have to think. You'll take the wrong path more than once, pitch camp foolishly, and then half your team freezes overnight. That's Midwinter.

At release, this game was conceptually ahead of its time. Not many games teach you that survival isn't about how many enemies you kill, but how well you can navigate your environment and support each other. The mechanics were interesting for their day, but people weren't used to them, and sometimes that worked against the game — reviews often complained about "slowness" and "seemingly chaotic controls at first glance".

Today Midwinter reads like an archaeological artifact. The graphics are primitive, the models blocky pixels, but the landscape has a stark, desolate beauty that won't let you forget you're in a hostile place. It still works on atmosphere, though. You can play it in DOSBox and discover what it means to play a game that makes life harder for you instead of easier. It's not a game for today's "instant gratification" crowd. It's for those who remember that gaming can mean something other than jump buttons and triple-kill combos.
