About the game

Martial Champion was Konami's stab at the one-on-one fighting game craze that Street Fighter II unleashed across arcades, arriving in 1993 when seemingly every major publisher wanted a piece of the versus-fighting boom. It fielded a roster of colorful combatants drawn from different cultures and fighting styles, and leaned on Konami's strong art team for large, detailed character sprites and a vivid presentation that tried to distinguish it from the growing pack of imitators.

In practice it never reached the mechanical depth or lasting popularity of the games it was chasing, and it's remembered more as an ambitious also-ran of the genre's golden age than as a classic in its own right. For fighting-game historians it's an interesting look at how the biggest names in the business scrambled to answer Capcom, but as a game to play now it feels distinctly of its moment.
