About Kens Labyrinth

Ken Silverman was eighteen years old, had his own raycasting engine, and apparently a missing puppy. The result was Ken's Labyrinth from 1993 — a shareware first-person shooter that came out a year after id Software showed the world Wolfenstein 3D, and a year before Silverman started working on the Build engine for 3D Realms.

The objective is refreshingly simple: find your dog and escape the labyrinth. The game stretches across three episodes filled with maze-like corridors, enemies, and various interactive objects. That last part is surprising for a game from this era — you'll stumble upon soda machines where you can buy supplies, for instance. For 1993 and a one-man teenage project, that was an unexpected detail.

The mechanics sit somewhere between Wolfenstein and unfinished ambition. Movement is stiff, shooting straightforward, enemies charge in and die without much drama. The engine handles raycasting similarly to Wolf3D, but without its visual consistency — the graphics are noticeably rougher and corridors can blur into visual noise. That doesn't hurt any less today than it did in 1993, honestly more. The Sound Blaster audio is functional, but forgettable.

We remember Ken's Labyrinth mainly as a curiosity in a portfolio. Silverman's later Build engine powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior — titles that are still actively played today. Here you see where that journey began. The engine has interesting moments, responds to input decently, and can surprise you in a few places, but the game as a whole is more of a technical exercise than a polished title. Silverman released it as freeware himself, so at least he's not pretending otherwise.

Today I'd recommend it to one specific type of player: someone who wants to see what FPS development looked like between Wolfenstein and Doom, and is curious about where one of the nineties' key engines came from. As a historical document, it's valuable. As afternoon entertainment — you'll survive one episode, understand the context, and probably return to Duke.
