About the game

I remember the first time I saw Joust at the arcade — those two flapping wings, knights on ostriches, lava rubble beneath their feet. It was absurd and instantly comprehensible at the same time. When Williams released the VGA version for PC in 1990, I finally had a chance to experience it at home, without coins.

Joust is an arcade classic from 1982, and its DNA remains untouched in this VGA adaptation. You play as a knight on a winged ostrich, hovering above platforms suspended over lava, trying to ram enemy knights — and it's whoever flies higher at the moment of impact that matters. A simple principle that turns out to be surprisingly tactical in practice.

The controls are deliberately clunky — the ostrich flaps its wings with a key press, flight has momentum and never obeys precisely. This isn't a flaw, it's intentional. Getting the hang of movement so it flows smoothly rather than chaotically takes a bit of time. On the keyboard, though, it's a noticeable compromise from the joystick the original arcade relied on. You're pressing spacebar with one hand and arrows with the other, and sometimes it feels like you're playing on a typewriter.

What the VGA version really delivered is graphical clarity. Compared to earlier ports — and there were plenty — the sprites are sharp, the colors vibrant, the overall image feels polished. Sound support is the weak spot: with a cheap sound card or none at all, you get beeping that undermines atmosphere more than it builds it. Sound Blaster makes a bigger difference here than you'd expect.

Joust is a game that aged the way good things age — it didn't change, it's simply what it's always been. Don't expect progression, story, or unlockable content. There's a loop that either grabs you or it doesn't. To today's player used to tutorials and progress markers, it might feel sparse. But if you're willing to give the game five minutes and accept logic that's literally like physics in this world, it rewards you the way it rewarded people at the arcade — with the urge to try again, better.

In the browser today it sits well for anyone who wants an arcade experience without installation and without apologies. One session lasts five minutes or an hour — it depends only on when you stop cursing at that dammed ostrich.
