About Earth Invasion

If someone back in the nineties said "I want to shoot aliens from the keyboard and I want it simple," Earth Invasion would've been a solid candidate. It's old-school arcade shoot-em-up in its purest form — enemies fall from above, you shoot, they disappear. No frills, no story, just computer promises and your reflexes.

The game throws you into World War II that somehow moved to space — or something like that. Really, it's more of a generic sci-fi shooter from four directions with bare-bones mechanics. You move around the screen, shoot incoming attacks, and try not to get hit. The design is rough, animation minimal, but that's not really a problem — in this type of game, reaction time and speed are what count.

The controls are straightforward to the point of being harsh — move with a key, shoot with a key. Nothing fancy, no combo systems or power-ups. You just play, simple and repetitive. Over and over. Until the game randomly becomes brutally hard and you die. Then you try again. It's a dull rhythm, but especially these days, when games shower players with achievement points and hearts, there's something strange about that appeal — precisely because it promises you nothing.

Earth Invasion won't gain recognition as a cult classic. It's not Galaxian or Space Invaders. It's an average thing someone threw together in a DOS editor and sent out as shareware. There were thousands like it. Some aged better, some worse. This one aged neutrally — neither memorably good nor memorably bad.

Playing it today makes sense only as nostalgia: you want to feel the tedium and routine of eighties PC gaming, sitting at your keyboard shooting everything that moved. Nothing more, nothing less. Graphics are pixelated as modern players expect from retro, music is minimal, the game runs and works. If simple arcade action without fancy stuff calls to you, you'll breeze through it in five minutes and forget it. And that's okay.
