About D-Day - America Invades

The answer is: Normandy, June 1945, and you're in charge of American ground forces. D-Day - America Invades is essentially a military calculator wrapped in a DOS interface, where strategy means deciding how many tanks to send left and how many right. If the Second World War could be won this easily, it would've been over by the weekend.

It's an invasion simulator where you look at a map of Normandy from a bird's-eye view and command units by inputting orders. The goal is to push against German forces, capture strategic points, and avoid losing more soldiers than reasonable. The game pretends to be detailed — you've got ammo counts, morale stats, casualty figures — but without actual gameplay, it's all theater. There are units, there are numbers, there's logic, but playing it is as dull as sitting on a bench in a waiting room.

The mechanics boil down to assigning orders and waiting for units to move. There's no real-time action, no pace at all. You plan your turn, the computer takes its turn, and you see what happened. The graphics are spartan — pixelated tanks on pixelated terrain — and there's barely any animation. Menu-based controls are slow and tedious. After an hour you're watching the clock. After two hours you know you won't be coming back.

Strategies and simulators were trendy in the nineties, but only the better ones held your attention. D-Day - America Invades was surprisingly hollow, despite having a decent premise. It was more of a training exercise than a game, and training exercises are for soldiers, not players looking for fun. Today it feels exactly like individual mouse clicks on units — everything without momentum, without drive, without reason to care.

Play it today? Only if you're curious what the grayest corners of mid-nineties game development looked like. Otherwise grab Panzer General or anything with a pulse. This simulator left its at home.
