About Fox Ranger

Year 1992, twelve years old, Sound Blaster in the computer for the second time, and a diskette in hand promising space action. I fired up Fox Ranger by Soft Action back then with high expectations and set it down in roughly the same mood I opened it with — no thrills, but no disappointment either.

It's a horizontally scrolling space shooter, one of dozens that flooded shareware markets and BBS bulletin boards at the time. You fly right to left or left to right, shoot everything coming at you, collect weapon upgrades, and face a boss at the end of each wave. The story, if one exists, serves a purpose roughly equivalent to wallpaper in the background — it's there, but nobody notices it.

The mechanics are exactly what you'd expect from the genre. Ship movement responds nicely, basic shooting works, and power-ups change how the game feels enough to make collecting them worthwhile. The difficulty is solid — the game lets you breathe for a moment, then dumps so many projectiles on you that you start remembering the days when you actually had reflexes. The bosses are visually more striking than the rest and give the game at least a few moments where you truly focus.

The presentation ranked among the better average for 1992. Graphics were clean, music acceptable, and Sound Blaster sound effects did their job. The problem lies elsewhere: Fox Ranger has nothing to set it apart. No clever idea in the weapon system, no visual theme that sticks with you, no moment you'd tell a friend about the next day. It's a game assembled from all the right parts that never quite develops its own identity. I've played dozens of similar titles, and Fox Ranger blended in with the rest long before I reached the end.

Today you can play it in your browser for twenty minutes and won't regret either the time or not knowing about it before. It'll appeal to those wanting to see what solid genre average looked like back when Steam didn't exist and every diskette was worth your attention simply because it was available. As a historical document, Fox Ranger has its value. As an experience, it won't give you much.
