About the game

Heavy weapons, angry alien, lots of things to shoot. That's the entire pitch for Alien Rampage, and Inner Circle Creations didn't feel the need to dress it up further. Whether that confidence was earned is a different question.

You play as a stranded extraterrestrial — built like a freight elevator, temper to match — tearing through a hostile planet to recover your stolen cargo and, presumably, make everyone involved deeply regret their life choices. It's a side-scrolling run-and-gun in the classic mold: left to right, kill everything, grab powerups, find the exit. The story exists just enough to justify the carnage, which is exactly as much story as this kind of game needs.

The shooting feels solid. Your alien carries an arsenal that swaps out as you find new weapons, and there's a real difference between them — some melt through crowds, others punch through armor, and switching on the fly becomes second nature after an hour. Enemy variety is decent for the genre, and the levels have enough vertical movement and hidden routes to keep you from feeling like you're just walking a treadmill. What drags is the pacing in the later stages, where the game starts throwing damage-sponge enemies at you like it's billing by the hour. Also the music, which sounds like it was composed by someone who heard MIDI described over the phone.

Here's the problem that no amount of solid mechanics could fix: Alien Rampage shipped in 1996. Quake was out. Duke Nukem 3D was out. The PC gaming world had collectively decided that if a game didn't have a Z-axis, it was furniture. A competent side-scroller arriving that year felt less like a release and more like an apology for being late. It wasn't a bad game — it was a game that lost the argument before it started. On its own terms, without the calendar attached, it holds up as a brisk, no-nonsense shooter with some real crunch to it. On the terms the market was actually using in 1996, it never stood a chance.

Today it's a comfortable forty minutes to a few hours depending on how thoroughly you explore, and it runs in a browser without ceremony. If you were raised on Turrican or the Genesis-era Contra ports, Alien Rampage will feel like familiar ground — not revelatory, but competent in a way that scratches a specific itch. If you need your retro fix to be historically significant, look elsewhere. But if you want to spend a lunch break as a furious alien with a minigun and no diplomatic options, Inner Circle Creations made exactly that game.
