The Mario Party series rests on a single idea that has not changed since the first entry. Four players move around a board, roll dice, collect coins and spend them on stars. Between rounds comes a minigame, usually under a minute long, and its outcome decides who gains ground. An evening therefore consists of many short contests in which one good roll or one won minigame can reverse the standings.

Mario Party 5, released in 2003 and developed by Hudson Soft, is the fifth instalment. Hudson handled the series from the beginning, and each sequel changed mainly the minigame roster and the board layouts. The minigames are what distinguish one entry from another: there are typically several dozen, split into free-for-alls, two-versus-two matches and one-versus-three setups.

By design the game leans heavily on chance. Late-game bonuses routinely reshuffle the order, so a player who trailed the entire session can still finish first. Competitive players tend to hold that against the series; for a mixed group sharing one screen it is the main reason the format works at all, because nobody is mathematically eliminated early.
