Über Fun School

Diese Rezension ist noch nicht übersetzt — wir zeigen das Original (English).

When you came home from school as a kid and found a Commodore 64 waiting instead of homework, you knew math and English were going to be fun. Fun School was this educational grab bag — the kind of game you could play guilt-free. The fact that it was basically lessons disguised as games? That was the whole point.

The Fun School series came out on various 8-bit computers, and the Commodore had its own versions. It wasn't a single game so much as a collection of minigames focused on addition, subtraction, words, and logic. Each task took a few minutes, then you moved on to the next one. Nothing flashy, but the goal was crystal clear — keep your brain working, not just your fingers.

The graphics were pure '80s minimalism. Commodore colors — that specific palette that still stares back at you from the screen today. No fancy animations, just simple blinking. Controls were straightforward, no unnecessary complexity — you had to focus on the problem, not wrestling with the keyboard. While today's educational games assault you with sounds and flashy effects, this one just let you think. You could count on your fingers, talk it out loud if you needed to. It wasn't fun in the modern sense, but it had a quiet charm.

Pedagogically, these were well-intentioned experiments. Unlike the countless "learn and play" titles that came later and were just boring lessons with cute icons, there was a genuine effort here to keep things simple and unpretentious. But it aged precisely because it never tried to be cool. Today's kids wouldn't stick around for five minutes.

These days you look at it more as an artifact — a window into how education worked when you had a computer in the '80s. If you want to understand what learning with computers actually looked like back then, this is it. Playing it in an emulator is more nostalgia than entertainment, but that's exactly where its charm lies.
