Freeway

Freeway is a 1981 Activision release for the Atari 2600 with a premise that fits in one sentence: a chicken needs to cross the highway. Lanes of traffic stream across the screen, and the player steers the bird from one edge to the other as many times as the timer allows. Every completed crossing scores a point; every collision knocks the chicken back toward where it started.

Activision itself was a brand-new phenomenon in 1981 — the first independent game publisher in history, founded by programmers who left Atari partly because they wanted their names on their work. The company's early output shares one philosophy, and Freeway is a textbook case: a task anyone understands instantly, controls tuned to perfection, and a score counter that quietly demands one more attempt.

The design also shows how elegantly a good idea could live inside the 2600's limits. One static screen, rules learned in three seconds, and tension generated purely by thickening traffic. The record lists one or more players, and the head-to-head mode is the secret star — two chickens racing side by side to out-cross each other turns a solo score chase into a genuinely funny duel. Activision's famous patch programme — mail in proof of a high score, receive a badge — gave that counter real-world weight as well.
