Hugo's House of Horrors

Hugo walks through a mansion, collecting keys, items, and magazines with partial nudity that excite him more as a nineties boy than any boss ever could. These are logic adventures from Rainbow Arts released in 1990, played mainly by those who couldn't afford King's Quest but had some floppy disks collecting dust in the closet.

The goal is straightforward: get from room to room, collect items, solve simple logic puzzles, and avoid bats, spiders, and other creatures that will knock you out without warning. The game is full of adventure tropes — really, it's a hybrid between an interactive novel and a puzzle game. Don't fight, just think. Find a mustache, take the sword, grab something else. The path to the exit winds through a sequence of objects that has logic, but it's nowhere near as creative as later King's Quest games.

You play by clicking or entering simple commands — take this, go there, use that. The graphics are primitive pixel art, the animation clunky, but it has that charming quality of age. The sound is whatever — beeps, thuds, nothing that would entertain you. The biggest frustration is that puzzle solutions aren't always clear; sometimes you get stuck with no clue why that item won't work at the right moment. The game punishes you with death quite easily and without mercy.

Hugo's House of Horrors spawned several sequels and became a cult classic for those who love old logic adventures without embellishment. It's not a game for everyone — modern players will find it tedious because of the slow pace and vague hints. But as an artifact from an era when adventures weren't about playing, but about waiting and thinking, it deserves respect.

Today you'll probably only enjoy it through nostalgia and historical interest. Try it in DOSBox, run it in your browser through web emulation — it's not long, it's not hard, but it demands patience. It's a time capsule, not a comedian.
