About the game

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is Capcom's 1988 arcade sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins, and the Sega Mega Drive conversion became one of the console's early showcase titles. Once again you take the role of the knight Arthur, battling through a nightmarish gauntlet of zombies, demons and the undead to rescue a kidnapped princess, this time to undo a curse that has befallen the land.

The series' defining trait is its ferocious difficulty. Arthur can take just two hits, the first stripping away his armor and leaving him in his underwear, the second killing him outright, and the game demands memorization, precise jumps and careful use of the various sub-weapons scattered through its stages. A brutal twist, carried over from the arcade, forces skilled players to loop back through the whole game with a special weapon to reach the true ending.

The Mega Drive port, one of Sega's own early efforts on the hardware, captured the arcade's look and punishing feel impressively well and helped demonstrate what the 16-bit machine could do at launch. Decades on, Ghouls 'n Ghosts remains a benchmark for tough-but-fair action platforming, revered by players who enjoy its relentless challenge and cursed by everyone who has watched Arthur die in his boxers.

The Mega Drive version has three codes of its own, all entered on the title screen while the "Press Start Button" prompt is flashing. You know you got them right by the sound — the game plays a harp or a bell.

With level select on, you pick your destination with a direction and a button: Start = The Execution Place, A + Start = The Floating Island, Up + Start = The Village of Decay, Up + A + Start = Town of Fire, Down + Start = Baron Rankle's Tower, Down + A + Start = Horrible Faced Mountain, Left + Start = The Crystal Forest, Left + A + Start = The Ice Slopes, Right + Start = beginning of the castle, Right + A + Start = middle of the castle and Down or Right + Start = Loki. Pressing A instead of Start takes you to the second half of the chosen level.

Invincibility has three exceptions to watch for: it will not save you from falling into a pit, from the green hand in level four, or from being stamped on by Loki. Codes from the arcade original, the Master System or Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the SNES do not work on the Mega Drive.
