About Hex

Grab a pen and paper — that's exactly what this is. Hex is an abstract strategy game on a board made of hexagons, where two players place pieces and try to connect their sides of the board. No story, no sound, no flashy moves — just pure logic and mathematics that takes three minutes to learn and half a lifetime to master.

At first it seems primitive. You control the cursor, click a space, your piece lands. Your opponent (the computer) takes their turn. The goal is simple: create an unbroken line from one side of the board to the other. No animations, no effects — just an overhead view of the game board and the contrast of white and black stones on a gray grid. You get the feeling you're playing Pong in a checkered classroom when someone forgot to take out the TV.

But then it shifts. The computer plays this game better than you do. Much better. It sees four moves ahead, you see two. When you think you're blocking its line, it already planned the detour two moves back. You scratch your head wondering why you just moved into its trap, and you realize that Hex isn't a game of luck — it's a game about what a fool you are. The computer knows it and tells you without saying a word, just by placing its next piece.

Back in the eighties it was an interesting oddity — a mathematical puzzle in a DOS interface. The programmers knew this was König's problem dressed up as a game, and they built an AI on top of it that remembers every move and squirms out of any trap. There's no fanfare here, no excuses. Either you're smarter than the computer, or you're not. The board doesn't forgive mistakes; the game doesn't end with ceremony, you just realize you've lost once the cigarette smoke clears.

Today Hex suits those who want to verify they've got a brain in their head. This isn't relaxation — play something else for that. Hex is a cold shower from the computer's python, telling you: no, you're not as smart as you thought. And paradoxically, that's its charm. You can play it in a browser just fine, but knowing it's running on an eighties CPU that we're now emulating gives it something special. A clash with history across a game board.
