About the game

Gold Rush! is one of Sierra On-Line's 1988 adventures, built on the same AGI engine that powered the early King's Quest and Space Quest games, complete with typed text parser and keyboard-driven movement. What set it apart was its subject: instead of fantasy or science fiction, it dramatised the very real California Gold Rush of 1849, casting you as Jerrod Wilson, a young newspaperman in Brooklyn who liquidates his life to chase fortune and a long-lost brother out west.

The game's cleverest idea is its trio of routes to California. You can book passage around Cape Horn, take the shortcut across the fever-ridden Isthmus of Panama, or join a wagon train overland - each a genuinely different journey with its own hazards, encounters and puzzles. That branching structure gave Gold Rush! real replay value and a strong educational streak, grounding its scenarios in period detail about the perils and logistics of 19th-century travel.

As with all parser-era Sierra games, it can be unforgiving - the wrong choice or a missed item can leave you stuck or dead - and the interface will feel archaic to newcomers. But it stands as one of the more thoughtful and historically curious titles in Sierra's classic run, and the multiple-path design still feels ambitious decades on.
