The crowd noise hits before anything else. Not the roar — that cheap loop that every sports game recycled to death — but the specific hum of a stadium settling in, waiting. FIFA 97 knew how to make you feel like you were about to watch something real, even on a machine that could barely handle the geometry.

Released in 1996 for DOS and a handful of other platforms, FIFA 97 was EA Canada's follow-up to the series that had already planted its flag as the football game on PC. It carried licensed leagues, real club names, real kits — the kind of thing that mattered enormously when the competition was still fielding teams called "Blue City" and "Red United." The goal was straightforward: more authentic football, packaged well enough to justify the price tag on whatever market stall you found it at.

The gameplay sits somewhere between arcade and simulation, leaning toward arcade when you need it to and pretending otherwise the rest of the time. The 3D engine was smoother than its predecessor, players moved with something approaching weight, and for the first time you could feel the difference between a tight touchline run and a cut through the middle. Indoor mode — five-a-side on a smaller pitch — was the thing everyone talked about, because it was frantic and loud and completely different from the main game. It also had a tendency to devolve into a brawl, which was not necessarily a flaw. The AI aged poorly. It plays today like someone gave eleven defenders a single instruction and forgot to explain the rest.

What FIFA 97 actually delivered was confidence. The series had been finding its footing, and this was the entry where EA stopped apologizing and started assuming you'd buy it anyway — because you probably would. The commentary, delivered by John Motson and Andy Gray, was the first genuinely listenable commentary in the series. Repetitive within twenty minutes, yes, but the bar it cleared was underground. Technically it pushed the DOS platform about as far as a sports title needed to go, and it showed up at exactly the right moment when CD-ROM installs and Sound Blaster output felt like they could approximate something real.

Today it plays like a museum piece that occasionally reminds you it used to be furniture. The controls hold up well enough in a browser — simple enough that muscle memory from any later FIFA translates without too much confusion. If you were there in 1996, it's the kind of game that puts you back in a specific room, in a specific chair, with a specific smell of plastic casing warming up under the monitor. If you weren't, it's a useful way to understand why people got excited before football games had transfer budgets and Ultimate Team packs. Start with indoor mode.
