About the game

Xyphus, released in 1984, belongs to the early wave of computer role-playing games that was still working out how to move tabletop play onto a screen. Penguin Software, later trading as Polarware, committed to a party: you do not guide one character but a group of adventurers, deciding both where they go and what each of them does in combat. That was not a given in 1984, when a great many role-playing games were built around a single hero.

The game sends that party into fantasy territory, improves their abilities over time, and resolves fighting turn by turn. The interface is austere by modern standards and a lot of information arrives as text, which on machines of the period was a memory decision — a written description cost a fraction of what a picture cost.

The Commodore 64 was a reasonable host thanks to its memory and disk support, but the constraints still bit: slow loading, limited resolution, and the need to account for every byte. The developers responded by concentrating complexity in the rules rather than the presentation.

Today Xyphus is difficult to approach without documentation. Early role-playing games assumed the player had printed material to hand and was taking notes on paper; without that the system is hard to navigate. Anyone willing to work through that layer gets a clear view of where later tactical party games came from.

Notably, role-playing games of this period borrowed nothing from cinema: the narration is description rather than scene, filled in by the player.
