About War Gods

War Gods began life as a 1996 Midway arcade machine before landing on the Nintendo 64, PlayStation and PC in 1997. It was Midway's attempt to carry the digitized-fighter formula it had made famous with Mortal Kombat into fully 3D combat, pitting a roster of warriors drawn from history and mythology against one another for control of a powerful cosmic ore.

The game let fighters move around the arena in three dimensions rather than along a flat plane, which was ambitious for the time, but the controls and balance never earned it the affection of its stablemate. Reviews on release were lukewarm, and today it is remembered more as a footnote in Midway's fighting-game history than as a classic. For enthusiasts of 1990s 3D brawlers it still holds a certain period novelty.
