About Trivial Pursuit

Here's how it went: Dad pulled a box of question cards from the shelf, Mom brewed some tea, and we spent a Saturday evening guessing what year Charles IV was born. The board game Trivial Pursuit ruled living rooms around the world back then. That someone adapted it for MS-DOS in 1989 made perfect sense — the computer didn't need flesh-and-blood opponents.

It's a trivia quiz, nothing more and nothing less. Players move around the game board, answer questions from six categories — geography, entertainment, history, arts and literature, science and nature, sports and leisure — and collect colored wedges. Whoever fills their wheel first and answers correctly at the center wins. The rules are exactly those from the box. The computer just took on the role of host.

And here I get to the heart of it. Adapting a board game to DOS doesn't automatically make a good computer game. The controls are simple, the interface functional, the graphics passable for 1989 — but the fun rises and falls entirely on whether you enjoy the questions. Playing solo against the computer is about as thrilling as solving a crossword and then throwing it in the trash. The game comes alive only with multiple players at one keyboard, when you can't leave the screen fast enough to keep your neighbor from seeing the answer.

What's aged worst today are the questions themselves. The database comes from the late eighties and is in English — Czech localization wasn't the custom back then. If you don't know American sports stars and Hollywood casting from the Reagan era, you'll regularly flounder in the entertainment category. Science and geography hold up better; time hasn't hurt them much.

Why play it today? If Trivial Pursuit as a board game entertained you and you want to remember what that transition from analog to digital looked like, it's an interesting period piece. The browser emulation works without installation, starts in twenty seconds, and you can finish a whole match in half an hour. It's not a cutting-edge gaming experience — it never was. But it's something: a 1989 computer can still catch you not knowing where Burkina Faso is.
