About the game

Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo is a 1988 Commodore 64 game published by Firebird, based on Stan Sakai's comic Usagi Yojimbo, which stars Miyamoto Usagi - a masterless samurai rabbit wandering a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. The game casts you as the ronin bunny, travelling the land and drawing his sword against bandits and enemies along the road.

What gave it character was a karma system: Usagi's honour rose and fell with his conduct, so needlessly cutting down foes or harming innocents carried consequences, tying the action to the comic's bushido themes rather than pure hack-and-slash. That moral wrinkle, unusual for an 8-bit action game, is the main reason it is still remembered.

As a licensed 8-bit title it is a faithful nod to Sakai's world and a relatively thoughtful take on samurai combat for its time. It appeals most to fans of the comic and of the Commodore 64's deeper catalogue, where its honour mechanic set it a notch apart from the era's more mindless swordplay.
