About Power Drive

Summer 1994, sweltering heat, a fan blowing hot air, and my fingers hammering the arrow keys because this car just won't stay on the track. Power Drive from Rage Software — a rally racing game that jumped off the discount software shelf and wouldn't let go all summer long.

It's a rally arcade with cartoon graphics, top-down view. No realism, no textbook physics — the car slides around the track like soap in a bathtub and that's exactly the point. You race against the clock through diverse tracks, the scenery changes, a co-driver shouts instructions to help you along, and the whole thing feels like a sped-up version of what console ports could do back then. Rage Software made ports for multiple platforms and the 1994 PC version didn't forget that — it plays like a console title, but you control it with the keyboard.

The mechanics are straightforward. Gas, brake, steering — done. The depth comes in how the game punishes imprecision. Tracks narrow down, corners come fast, and the oversteery car only forgives mistakes if you're not making them. An old review I went off noted "cartoonish rally" and that nails it: the graphics are colorful, readable, and barely realistic at all, and it works better today than many of those era's attempts at photorealism. Sound Blaster pumped out engine roar and co-driver callouts that stop being charming after the twentieth time — but at first it's part of the atmosphere.

Power Drive wasn't a groundbreaking game. It didn't invent the genre or kill it. What it could do was deliver arcade rallying without unnecessary complications and with enough punch to make you try the tracks over and over. For what was largely a port, the PC result was solid. Today the controls feel a bit clunky — a keyboard is a crude tool for this type of game and MS-DOS never got a gamepad. But everyone who raced anything in the nineties besides a mouse or joystick knew that already.

Today you can play it in your browser via DOSBox emulation and it's still a pleasant quarter-hour. It won't suit anyone wanting depth or a career mode with garage and upgrades. It'll suit those who love simple, readable racing where the result depends on you, not systems behind the scenes. And also those who want to know what arcade racing looked like before Gran Turismo came along and told everyone this wasn't actually a racing game.
