Out Run 2019

Out Run 2019 is a 1993 Sega Mega Drive racing game that carries the Out Run name but trades the original's breezy convertible cruising for a futuristic setting. Developed by SIMS, it swaps the Ferrari-style coastal drive for sleek, near-hovering cars racing along neon tracks in a science-fiction vision of the future, with boost mechanics and a much faster, more aggressive sense of speed.

The connection to the beloved arcade original is loose at best, and the game is generally regarded as a decent but unremarkable high-speed racer rather than a worthy sequel to Sega's classic. It captures a certain early-90s idea of what the future of racing might look like, and for Mega Drive owners it offered a fast, colourful arcade-style blast. Today it is mostly of interest as a curious offshoot of the Out Run brand rather than a headline racer of the era.
