About Memory

I remember downloading something called Memory from a BBS back in eighty-three, and I thought it would be some kind of game. It was basically a digital version of what you know from card matching — you flip pairs, hunt for matches, memory wins. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's a logic game in its purest form, no story, no frills. A grid appears on your screen, usually eight by eight or smaller, each tile hiding a picture or letter. Your goal: find all the pairs and uncover them before you lose interest. When you flip two tiles and they match, they stay visible. If they don't, they flip back and you have to remember them. Simple mechanic that works.

You play with the keyboard, navigating the grid is intuitive — arrow keys or number pad, Enter to confirm. No complications. The graphics are bare-bones — hand-drawn simple icons, numbers, maybe little characters. Sound, if it exists at all, is just a beep for errors or success. It's a piece of work that wasn't trying to be anything more than a way to kill fifteen minutes during a break.

That's exactly why I remember this game. In the nineties, when graphical adventures and Lemmings seemed like the peak, Memory was honestly retro even back then. No emotional hook, no progression, no sense of growing mastery. It was pure memory training, like a paper game translated to screen.

Today? Memory is the kind of thing someone plays when they want to relax without distractions. No pressure, no story. It works the same way it did forty years ago — brain exercise, nothing more. When you've got a spare moment and want to test how your memory's holding up, it's there. Unpretentious, no trendy graphics. An honest piece of software.
