About King's Quest V - Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder

The King disappears, the Queen gets lost, and Prince Graham has to call a cab to go rescue her. King's Quest V is a story that doesn't bother with logic — the scenario unfolds like a stretched rubber band, but there's something magical about it precisely because of that.

It's a point-and-click adventure with puzzle elements scattered across several locations from forests through castles to bizarre dimensions. The goal is simple: collect items, combine them, solve situations. The game doesn't push you, doesn't explain objectives, it just throws you into a world and expects you to figure out what comes next. Sometimes an NPC wants a magical scroll, sometimes you have to remember what we talked about two screens back.

Playing it is laziness incarnate. Your character drags across the screen like a chicken with a broken leg. You click on inventory and it opens like a train moving upstream through time. The worst are the timed action sequences — moments when the game expects a specific move in a specific position, and if you mess up, you're back three screens and starting over. There's no fun in it, just frustration. The minimalist 320×200 pixel graphics stare at the world like a tour guide possessed by a translator — everything feels a bit off, a puzzle without a friendly face.

Yet King's Quest V is an important game. A whole generation of nineties adventures learned from it. The puzzle logic isn't seductive, but for the first time in the series you can move your character with the mouse instead of the keyboard — with the mouse, like in real life. The graphics have the charm of something that barely fits into a computer, and inventory items look like pieces you're actually manipulating. In the nineties, this game was a star. Today nostalgia and painful slowness peer out of it.

Nowadays mainly those who remember what computers were used for back then will play it. In a browser without loading screens it sits better, but it won't change the essence — it's a long, sometimes frustrating journey with a lovely atmosphere and logic that works if you surrender to it and just keep clicking. And that's exactly what makes it a retro experience.
