About Gobman 1.0

Gobman. A name many people don't understand, but that's what it was like — in the nineties, everything ran on computers. This 1992 game is a Pac-Man-like that doesn't dare to do anything more than let you collect bonuses while colorful monsters chase you around. Disk space was limited, so the creators didn't have much room to work with.

Gobman 1.0 – screenshot 1

You play in a maze, collect what you can, and escape from enemies. You won't find any twists here, no story, no plot. It's pure electronic gaming on the run-collect-flee principle. Typical for an era when the term "game design" wasn't used — people just made games instinctively. Gobman gives you a map, tells you what to do, and the rest is up to you.

The controls are simple — like every game of that era, either arrow keys, WASD, or the number pad; every creator picked a different combo. Playing itself isn't unpleasant, just boring. The monsters move in simple patterns, levels repeat with minimal changes. After fifty minutes you're saturated — you know exactly what's going to happen, and you keep playing only because you're stubborn, not because it pulls you in.

Gobman today means primarily something you don't remember at all. It's not the famous Pac-Man, it's not even Dig Dug. It's one of dozens of anonymous attempts that got lost in computer shops and the pages of computer magazines. The graphics are purely functional, the sound (if you can even call it that) wouldn't offend anyone, but it wouldn't please them either.

Playing Gobman today makes sense only as a chapter in your personal archaeological expedition through older PC games. It's not a game you'll remember, but it's a game that tells you how games were made in a time when the gaming industry didn't yet have an ambitious brain driving it, and everyone just did what was possible. It fits if you want to get a sense of what was normal, not the exception.
