About DOOM: NUTS

Whenever "NUTS" gets mentioned among fans, everyone knows what's up — one of the wildest WAD mods for the original DOOM. It's not a game by itself, but a total level overhaul whose author remains somewhat mysterious (some sources don't even list them). It's pure chaos, the exact opposite of everything you do carefully and methodically in Doom Builder.

NUTS is basically a space probe heading into the class of maps that don't respect any design rules. Rage on the screen — piles of monsters, barrels, imps, everything at once and with no logic. The idea is simple: you stand in a blazing hall full of demons, and your only job is to gun them all down. No story, no subtlety, no reason. It's basically a benchmark that tweakers from the nineties used to stress-test their PCs.

You play with the things you know — your weapon arsenal, DOOM engine elements, basically everything. Except here, balance goes out the window. We're not cruising through a level, learning gradually, polishing our skills. Instead it's a five-minute sprint packed with gunfire, panic, and the struggle to survive the onslaught. Computers sweat when you even try to run it, though today's machines handle it without breaking a sweat. But the idea — carved from conviction and fury — is fascinating as a phenomenon.

NUTS became legendary precisely because it's so unapologetically over-the-top. Over the years it became the measuring stick, the standard test for every DOOM port and every new weapon in community WADs. It's a culture, a ritual, and proof that you don't have to play games smartly to enjoy them. You just shoot, and that's enough.

Today there's no reason not to try it — it's freely available in any archive of DOOM mods. If you've got a healthy sense of the absurd and like to see how far things can be pushed, NUTS will show you that chaos can be fun in itself. All you need is the tool and the guts to break the rules.

DOOM: NUTS cheats and codes

Reveal cheats (spoiler)

Doom cheats are typed straight into the running game — there is no console and no menu to open. You simply type the code on the keyboard while running through a level, and a confirmation message appears at the top of the screen after the last letter. If you are playing in the browser, click inside the game window first so the keyboard talks to the game and not to the page. Doom II runs on the same engine as the first game, so exactly the same codes apply — except that noclip here is IDCLIP (not IDSPISPOPD) and IDCLEV takes a two-digit map number, for instance IDCLEV15 for MAP15. NUTS is the notorious Doom II map that throws thousands of monsters at you at once. IDDQD is not a crutch here but practically the only way to see the thing at all, and IDDT on the automap shows you just how many are waiting.

CodeEffect
IDDQDGod mode — neither monsters nor the environment can take your health
IDKFAAll weapons, full ammo, armour and every key in the level
IDFAAll weapons, ammo and armour, but no keys
IDCLIPWalk through walls (noclip) — the Doom II and later variant
IDSPISPOPDWalk through walls (noclip) — works only in Doom 1 and Ultimate Doom
IDBEHOLD + letterPower-ups: S = berserk strength, I = partial invisibility, V = invulnerability, A = full area map, L = light amplification visor, R = radiation suit
IDCLEV##Warp instantly to a chosen level (IDCLEV12 = episode 1, map 2; in Doom II IDCLEV20 = MAP20)
IDDTReveals the automap; typed twice it also shows monsters and items (only works with the automap open)
IDMYPOSDisplays your current coordinates and viewing angle
IDMUS##Plays the music track from a chosen level (e.g. IDMUS05)
IDCHOPPERSGrants the chainsaw plus temporary invulnerability, with the message “Doesn’t suck – GM”

For a single map, IDDT makes the most sense — the automap shows you the whole floor plan at once and you immediately see how it was built. Doom cheats are not hidden in a menu, they are simply key sequences — which is why you can trigger one by accident. They are also worth saving for a second playthrough: IDDQD turns Doom into a shooting gallery and switches off the rule the whole game is built on, namely managing ammo and health.
