Hudson Soft released Adventure Island on the Nintendo NES in 1986, producing one of the more recognisable platformers of the eight-bit era. The hero runs left to right, gathers fruit, throws an axe or a stone, and tries to reach the end of a stage before his steadily draining vitality meter empties.

That meter is what separates the game from an ordinary platformer. Avoiding enemies is not enough; you are under constant time pressure and must keep eating along the way, or you will die on an empty stretch of ground. Jumping is tuned so the character keeps sliding a little after landing, which turns the game into a run that has to be planned ahead. Clearing a stage cleanly rewards knowing the layout rather than improvising through it.

Adventure Island belonged to the wave of NES titles that defined what a platformer was: short stages, instant death, a life lost to a single touch, and progress stored nowhere but in the player's reflexes. The series went on to become one of Hudson Soft's longest-running properties, with sequels across several platforms.

People try it today mainly for how uncompromising it is. It has none of the safety nets that arrived later, and the opening stages feel friendly only until the first pit with a moving platform. For players who get on with short, hard platformers built on clear rules, it still functions perfectly well. Everyone else will value the historical context more than the play.
