About 3D Dinosaur Adventure

When I first looked at the screen, I was greeted by a blocky 3D dinosaur head in a rendering that looked like the graphics engine had been struggling for the past twenty minutes. It was 1993, VGA cards were still finding their place, and this DOS program thought: why not try three-dimensional reptiles.

It's actually an exploration simulator where you wander among low-polygon theropods and sauropods that stare at you with the same confusion you feel looking at them. It's not a strategy game, a shooter, or a classic adventure – you simply walk around, look at the creatures, and maybe learn something about visiting the dinosaur age. The setting is more of an educational experiment than an entertainment game.

Controls are straightforward: move forward, turn left-right, and explore objects around you. The graphics look like a dream of a 3D world that the computer barely grasped – you can see individual polygons, and the reptile models twitch like something built from bricks. Sounds are sparse, added more for atmosphere than to convey anything. Playing it in the 90s unfolded gradually: first you discover you need to navigate around a dinosaur, then you realize it plays itself, without any real goal.

This game is interesting precisely because it doesn't pretend to be anything grand. There's no vice in it, no aggressive design – just an attempt at how a dinosaur park from the late eighties might look through the eyes of a programmer with leftover tape and determination. It aged naturally, without bitterness.

Today I play it more as a curiosity – a technological diary of someone who believed 3D on DOS could be worthwhile. It's not entertainment in the classical sense, but a glimpse into how the future of the digital world was imagined on a May day in 1993. It's a moment you can only find now in a browser or on an old computer, but it's worth looking at if you think of it as a snapshot of an era.
