Shufflepuck Cafe

A neighbor brought over an Apple II, and I, used to the sixteen colors of my Commodore 64, stared at that monochrome monitor with about as much enthusiasm as kids today have for black-and-white TV. The mouse felt weird to me, and I missed my joystick. And then I saw Shufflepuck Cafe for the first time.

Shufflepuck Cafe is air hockey — but set in a bizarre space bar full of alien opponents. Brøderbund released it in 1989, and the game came out on plenty of platforms including MS-DOS. Every opponent has a different playing style, different speed, different tactics. There's no career mode or a story with plot twists. It's about beating them one by one and not embarrassing yourself.

It plays simply: you move the paddle, you deflect the puck, you try to hit the opponent's goal and defend your own. Mouse controls were almost revolutionary back then — they responded precisely, which wasn't a given in 1989. Each opponent has their own character: one is slow but blocks the entire goal, another shoots diagonally like crazy. Difficulty ramps up gradually and at the right pace. This aspect hasn't aged badly at all.

What has aged is the graphics — but that's relative. On DOS, the game had colors and a bar-underworld atmosphere that worked surprisingly well for 1989. The sounds are exactly what you'd expect from a Sound Blaster of that era: punchy, simple, sufficient. There's no music, but you barely miss it until you think about it. The main weakness today: the game is short. You beat all the opponents and you're done. No online mode, no stats, no extra challenges.

Why play it today? Because it was one of the first examples of how simple rules plus well-written opponent AI create a game where you'll spend an evening. The air hockey mechanic can't be messed up, but someone really nailed it here. It fits anyone who wants something you'll learn in a minute but that'll still hold you for an hour or two. And also anyone to whom the word "Brøderbund" still means something.
