Here we have an atlas on floppy disks that you remember more from the computer classroom than from the arcade. PC Globe 5.0 from 1992 isn't a game in the traditional sense — it's an interactive world encyclopedia for MS-DOS that you could browse on an old keyboard with those yellowish keys instead of staring at a school globe.

You find yourself clicking across a map of countries, reading facts about population, climate, economy, and other boring stuff that was taught in geography class back then. Everything is described in text, with the occasional graph or table thrown in. Browsing through continents was once a way to learn something new without a physical library. Today it sounds embarrassing, but back then it was quite something.

The game is controlled with a mouse and keyboard, the menu is simple, but for the time it was more of a trendy thing than something you'd enjoy on a weekend. You're waiting for something to happen, for a story to unfold or for some plot twist to pull you in. Nothing like that. It's just descriptions, facts, like waiting for a lesson to end.

PC Globe belonged to the category of educational software-toys that creators sold to parents as education for kids. It was a time when a home computer was considered something serious and useful, and if you wanted to play games, you at least had to pretend you were learning. The atlas had its time, when it proved useful — when you were bored and wanted to know which country had more people than another, it was a faster source than the library.

Today, trying it out in a browser is worth it only if you're curious about how the world has changed since 1992, or if you want to see how a generation growing up without the internet first encountered digital geography. It's not enough for education, not enough for entertainment either. It's more of an archaeological curiosity — proof that edutainment was once imagined like this: text on a black background and a mouse.
