Sobre Atomic Robo-Kid

Esta reseña aún no está traducida — mostramos el original (English).

Originally a 1988 arcade board from the Japanese studio UPL, presented here in its Sega Mega Drive form, published in North America by Activision. The catalogue records a side view and single-player play.

The game blends two genres in a way that was unusual at the time. On the surface it resembles a horizontal shooter, with the player controlling a small robot that flies and fires, but the stages are not corridors. They are maze-like structures with branches, dead ends and a route that has to be found, so orientation matters as much as dodging. The robot can also turn and shoot in either direction, which makes moving right to left a normal part of play rather than an emergency measure.

Weaponry is the other defining element. Guns are collected, carry limited ammunition and are switched according to the situation, so stronger equipment has to be rationed for the moments that actually need it. Limited ammunition combined with maze layouts makes the game slower and more tactical than its presentation initially suggests.

Difficulty is arcade-hard in the strictest sense. Enemies appear quickly, the spaces are cramped and the robot takes very little punishment before it dies. The Mega Drive conversion preserved that character rather than softening it for home play.

You can launch it in the browser here on OldGame.cz, which makes trying a shooter built around maze navigation a matter of clicking rather than configuring emulation.

Gaming platform: Sega Mega Drive_□✕
About the platform 1988–1997

The Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in the US) was the first widely successful 16-bit console. A direct rival of the SNES and successor to the Master System, it sold around 30 million units and was made famous by Sonic the Hedgehog.

Maker: Sega  ·  Years: 1988–1997

Here on oldgame.cz you play it right in your browser via the EmulatorJS emulator — no install, no plugins, on desktop and mobile.

Recommended controls: This was a console game, so a USB gamepad gives the most authentic feel — just plug it into your computer. The keyboard works as well (see the controls table next to the game).
