About Zork I - The Great Underground Empire

You're in an open field. You see something white there. It's nothing more than brief instructions, but you already know you're about to embark on something that will take hours. Zork I from 1980 isn't a game you play — it's a game you read. A text-based alphabet full of mysteries, where your only tool is typing English commands and imagination.

Simply put: you're an underground exploration team in the hands of the player. The goal? Find and collect three artifacts across the Great Underground Empire. You solve it by entering commands like "go north," "take golden statue," "open door." The game responds with text, describing what you see, what you hear — sometimes through witty twists, sometimes through deadly traps. It's not a riddle where "the right word means survival," but rather exploration, logic, and mental resilience against absurd humor.

You play it slowly. You stand in one place, type, wait. There's no graphics to peek through mistakes or click your way forward. You have to imagine everything while being careful — when a command fails, you won't know if it's your typing or the game's design. There are dozens of deadly traps. One wrong move and you're loading your last save. The game doesn't hold your hand, doesn't guide you, just waits for your next line.

Zork I became a cult classic precisely because it played with you. Every response contains a layer of humor — sometimes it's just the game's dry comment on your nonsensical command, sometimes it's a scene written with distinctive style. This text adventure from MIT became a classic because it had personality. It didn't replace graphics; it used words as a weapon.

Has it aged? Technically it plays the same, but if you're used to Fallout or Baldur's Gate, you'll miss even the most basic comforts. There's no autosave, you must type commands in English and precisely, and if you don't save the game, you'll lose progress. Still — if you want to feel how computer games actually began and why gaming magazines wrote about them like literary experiences, there's no better-spent evening.

Zork I belongs in your browser if you have an ear for old things and don't want to wait. It's not a game you try out casually, but a game you take seriously — or not at all.
