Hydrofool

Hydrofool appeared in 1987 under the Faster Than Light banner, a label known on the ZX Spectrum for isometric arcade adventures with a strong visual identity. This one takes place underwater, with the player guiding a character through a system of tanks that have to be cleaned out one by one.

The structure is typical of the British school of the late eighties: a sprawling connected world divided into screens, objects collected in one place and used in another, and plenty of hazards that kill on contact. Moving through water adds inertia, so the character does not stop the moment you release the controls, and misjudging that drift causes most of the deaths.

On the Spectrum this class of game was technically demanding. An isometric scene had to be redrawn in pieces to keep up, and authors invented tricks to limit flicker and preserve readability under the machine's colour attribute system. FTL was among the better practitioners, and its games are recognisable both by their unmistakable environment style and by their harsh difficulty.

This is therefore not a game for the impatient. Progress requires mapping, repetition and acceptance that death will arrive frequently and without warning.
