About Airbase Invader

Airbase Invader is a ZX Spectrum release from 1984, credited to Chris Whittington and published by CP Software. Both the date and the platform place it in the densest stretch of British eight-bit output.

In 1984 the Spectrum was the most widespread home computer in Britain, and software for it appeared in enormous quantity. A single author usually did everything, a game fitted into 48 kilobytes, and distribution meant a cassette that took several minutes to load. That is why one name so often covers programming, graphics and design on these titles.

The hardware had quirks developers had to work around. The display handled colour as attributes across eight-by-eight pixel blocks, so moving objects influenced each other's colours. Sound came from a single-channel beeper. Developers turned those limits into a recognisable look: clean outlines, high contrast and very little background detail.

The title points at an attack on an air base, a popular subject in 1984. Military themes worked well within tight graphical limits, because an aircraft, a building and an explosion stay readable even when drawn from a handful of pixels.

The British cassette scene also had its own economic rhythm. Dozens of games appeared every month, magazine reviews decided sales within weeks, and a title that failed to catch on vanished from the shelves. Many 1984 programs survive only because collectors transferred the tapes into digital form before the magnetic layer degraded beyond reading.
