Ultimate Play the Game built its reputation on the ZX Spectrum, so a 1984 Commodore 64 release from the same studio is worth a look purely as a technical exercise. The Staff of Karnath is Ultimate stepping onto Commodore hardware, carrying over the arcade-adventure formula the team had refined elsewhere while adapting to a different display chip and a different sound system.

Structurally this is a room-by-room exploration game. You move through a large mansion drawn as a series of flip screens, gathering items and working out where each one belongs. Combat is not the point. Survival and mapping are. Hazards and creatures block progress and the answer is usually the right object rather than the right reflex. The protagonist is Sir Arthur Pendragon, and the game sits alongside three other Ultimate C64 titles featuring him.

Played today it demands patience. There is no quest log, no waypoint, no in-game hint system, so most players will end up sketching a map on paper the way people did in 1984. That is either the appeal or the dealbreaker. If you enjoy eight-bit adventures where the real puzzle is understanding the rules of the world, the design holds up, and the visuals are noticeably cleaner than many Spectrum-to-C64 conversions of the era. If you want pace and action, the deliberately slow rhythm will wear thin fast.
