Sobre Easy Adlib 1.0

Esta reseña aún no está traducida — mostramos el original (English).

When you were bored in the nineties without internet, you'd grab anything that could run. Easy Adlib was supposed to be theatre without a voice — painting scenes with text that the computer would then somehow play through a sound adapter. Just as long as it worked.

Easy Adlib 1.0 – screenshot 1

It's not a game in the traditional sense. It's more of a gimmick — you input words based on templates (adjective here, noun there) and the program assembles text from it. Then text-to-speech sinks its teeth into it and lets it shriek through a mechanical voice that sounds like a wounded Android invoking deities. The humor is... unintentional. And intentional. Both at once.

Controls aren't complicated — cursor keys, reading the manual, typing text. Graphics are DOS-minimalist, meaning none. You wait for the result like waiting for a bus — whatever comes out when you hit Enter. The fun lies exactly in never knowing if it'll be funny or painful. Sometimes both. Most often just irritating.

Easy Adlib lived in that moment when computers were getting voices and these people wanted to use them for anything. The result resembles what happens when you take radio text and have it read in a single monotone without breaks. After two minutes your jaw drops in agony.

Today it's interesting as an artifact — proof of how something could become a "game" in the early nineties just because it had a sound card cable. You can try it, but more as a curiosity. It doesn't age gracefully, more like something you'd be embarrassed by.
