About Voyeur

Suddenly you're in the apartment across the way, a telephoto camera in hand, and you feel sick. Voyeur from 1994 is a tribute to an obsession that had no name in computer games back then — it just got done. Sierra On-Line chose the direct route: you're going to stare into other people's windows, photograph people in intimate moments, and from those photos piece together a story that leads you to a crime.

The game is a photo-heavy attempt at combining point-and-click with a voyeuristic detective game. From your room's window you see one side of the street — several apartments with characters living their lives. Your goal is simple: watch, photograph, collect hints, and figure out what's really happening behind those curtains. The game happens in real time — if you want to see something, you need to be at the window at the right time. That means waiting, staring at the building, and hoping something happens.

The mechanics are boring by design. There's no action, no puzzles in the classical sense. You sit, watch, photograph. Occasionally a dialogue appears, sometimes a photo that triggers a caption. Photographs combine into scenes, scenes combine into a line that leads to a conclusion. It's more than a game — it's interactive voyeurism trying to be deeper than it actually is. The controls are simple and lazy, which aligns with the atmosphere. Sometimes it works, other times you just miss a shift in the plot.

Voyeur had a courage that nobody has anymore. It tried to play with discomfort and interest in people who don't concern us. It was a curiosity that doesn't age, because it never was mainstream. Visually it looks like a cut-up photo from sixties TV drama accounting — that's exactly how it was filmed. It wasn't a computer game for people who wanted to win; it was an experiment more interested in defying traditional rules.

Today you play it out of curiosity alone. Not for fun, but because you want to understand how such a thing could exist in the nineties. It's great material for discussions about gaming ethics and the boundaries of interactive entertainment. But honestly? It's boring, poorly paced, and pointless in many moments. You'll remember it more than you'd actually want to experience it again.
