About Emmanuelle

That an erotic adventure from the late eighties even exists, and someone actually tried to sneak it onto PCs — that's a gesture in itself. But Emmanuelle from 1989 is primarily a text adventure with a few graphical enhancements, somewhere between a pornographic novel and an instruction manual. It's not exactly a bad game — it's more of a weird artifact from an era when creators thought eroticism and gameplay could go together nicely.

Emmanuelle – screenshot 1

It's a point-and-click adventure where you find yourself in an Asian paradise, following the story of an ambitious girl named Emmanuelle on her journey of sexual discovery. Weakly rendered backgrounds, static character portraits, and minimal animation attempt to illustrate a plot that's basically a flimsy wrapper for what should be the real draw. You solve objects, tackle simple logic puzzles, click on your surroundings. It's a technique that's worked since Maniac Mansion, except here it's really just about pushing the story forward — definitely not about the satisfaction of solving anything.

Playing is tedious. Controls are sluggish, key items aren't hidden intelligently, just placed dumbly. If you're lucky, you'll get through a section in a few minutes; if not, you're wandering back and forth with no clear idea what to do. Dialogue is in English (if your computer can decode its character set), oscillating between snide snickering and the feeling you should be literally anywhere else. It's not funny, it's not sexy — it's just boring.

Emmanuelle today works only as historical curiosity. It's neither a good adventure nor compelling erotic content. It's testimony to how limited the possibilities were, and how people in the nineties pushed boundaries, even if the results came off awkwardly. The graphics are primitive even for their time, and the game feels lazy and passionless.

Want to check out an early erotic computer game for nostalgia's sake? Sure — find it online and see firsthand how things were written and made thirty-five years ago. But as entertainment? Forget it. There are more interesting ways.
