About the game

Capitalism, designed by Trevor Chan and released in 1995 through Interactive Magic, is about as deep as business simulations got in its day. Rather than the light, cartoonish tycoon games that were common at the time, it modeled an entire economy: you build factories, design products, set up retail outlets, run advertising, manage raw-material supply chains and even manipulate markets, all in pursuit of dominating whatever industries you chose to enter.

The signature feature was its detailed supply-and-demand engine. You could buy raw materials, refine them, manufacture goods, and sell them either wholesale or through your own stores, with prices reacting to competition and consumer demand across different city zones. Setting up a vertically integrated empire — owning every step from farm to shelf — was enormously satisfying, and the game demanded real attention to margins, logistics and pricing rather than just spamming buildings.

Its reputation was strong enough that it was later used in some business-education settings, and Chan expanded the concept in Capitalism Plus and the much later Capitalism II. It is undeniably dense and its interface is a lot to absorb, so it rewards patience over instant gratification. But for anyone who enjoys spreadsheets brought to life, it remains one of the most thorough economic simulators of the 1990s and still holds up as a thinking-player's sim.
