It plays with a simplicity that sneakily reminds you of Robotron or Smash TV. Move and shoot at the same time, which on a keyboard means one-handed control — arrow keys and firing in another direction simultaneously. Sounds worse than it is. It's worth it because the environment is dynamic, weapons swap out, explosives appear, tools drop. One moment you're grabbing an AK, a bit later someone's blowing themselves up with a grenade from a corner and you're scrambling for health packs. The graphics are pixelated in 16 colors, the sounds are jaggedly electronic, but it all works as straightforward, robust mechanics without any clever tricks.

What keeps you glued to the screen is exactly this simple uncompromising nature. It's not about character upgrades or achievements. It's just about getting through the level without getting shot. Sometimes that doesn't happen, happens multiple times in a row, and it's frustrating — difficulty balancing was probably never great — but when you nail a clean run without dying, you understand why games from that era did things right.
