Major Stryker — when I first downloaded it from some BBS, I expected an average shooter. Instead, after playing through a few levels, I realized someone here really understood how arcade should work.

It's a vertical shoot-em-up where you pilot a fighter and fly up the middle of the screen, shooting at everything that comes your way. Story? Well, from what I gathered, if there even was one — West versus some Eastern threat. It's not really the point. What matters is you've got several levels of varying difficulty and a pretty quick concept for each mission.
The controls are simple, as befits an arcade game. You shoot continuously, move left and right, collect power-ups. Nothing complicated. But here's the thing — Major Stryker does whatever it wants with the theme and color palette. Each level carves out its own visual style, which keeps things interesting without getting boring. The music plays in the background like sonic wallpaper, the shooting effects are clean and crisp. It's not graphically revolutionary, but you feel like someone put thought into it.

From today's perspective, what's aged most is that the difficulty jumps are sometimes careless — one level is a breeze, the next unfairly strips you of all your lives. The shooting controls also feel a bit clumsy sometimes when you want to fly around the edges and shoot the center. So you end up frustrated more than you should be.

If you're in the mood for a classic DOS shoot-em-up with no grand ambitions, Major Stryker will be waiting in any retro archive. It's not DeathSmiles, but it's not a waste of time either. You'll get an hour or two out of it, and that's OK.
