Merlin Challenge

A game board, a lonely wizard, and three minutes of pure maze. Merlin Challenge is the kind of thing that wrings concentration out of you, and then crushes you anyway. Released in 1993 on PC, it's a logic puzzle reincarnated in simple graphics, where everything except the solution disappears.

I'm playing something like a dash through a maze with the wizard Merlin. The task is straightforward — get to the other side of the playing field within the time limit. But watch out: with every move, the playing field changes. Walls shift, paths close off, what was a passage becomes a dead end. There are no extra layers here. No animation. Just pure logic that turns your brain to cotton.

The controls are simple — arrow keys and that's it. Only it hits you with reluctance, because with every move you have to think two, three, four moves ahead. One wrong choice and you're stuck in a corner with no way out. The game doesn't greet you with fanfare or surround you with music — there's just your brain versus the timer. Sometimes you think that a few more instructions wouldn't hurt, because the logic of these shifts isn't always obvious.

Merlin Challenge has its charm precisely in how little it offers. It's not a game that wants to entertain you; rather, it tests you. In the nineties, these kinds of things were popular on PC — logic challenges without narrative. Today it lacks what would give it a second life: level variety, some visual richness, at least a sense of progress. It's more of an etude than a full-bodied game.

When you play it today in an emulator or browser, it's like digging up an old photo album with a grimace on your face. There's no fun here, no respite. There's just your time and your nerve. If you love puzzles that don't flatter you and won't let go, go for it. Everyone else will find something with less pain.
