When a text-mode adventure appeared in the nineties, you knew an hour of reading awaited you instead of action. Grailquest from 1989 is no exception — it's a pure text adventure where you move by typing commands, hunt for words and trust descriptions instead of visuals.

The game sends you on a quest for the Holy Grail. A classic fantasy backdrop, no surprises, but that doesn't matter at all. The content is proverbial — exploring dungeons, collecting items, uncovering the story through text output. Every attempt to do something means typing a command like “take sword” or “go north”. The game answers with a sentence or two, and occasionally tries to be funny.

The problem is as old as the genre itself — a text adventure stands or falls on how intuitively you guess what the game wants to hear. You type “take gra” instead of “take grail”, and the game just leaves you stuck. Without a good guide or large doses of patience you are reduced to guessing words as in a quiz show. The controls are not really control — they are deaf words that fall into shackles.

Grailquest belongs to a time when adventures meant precise moments of genius amid long waits and senseless dead ends. It is a game from an era when only someone who owned a book of sample commands remembered it. Technically it is neither new nor interesting — it's an honest adventure without graphics, without time pressure, without dynamics.

Today you'll look at it through a web emulator as a curiosity. There is nothing in it that would hold you for more than a couple of rounds, unless you really wanted to walk safely out of the dungeon with the grail in your backpack. It has historical value, but no reason for a return visit.
