Siege Arm is one of the oldest surviving Indonesian video games. It was written in 1992 by David Setiabudi, then still a high-school student, in GW-BASIC under DOS. The game itself is an unpretentious action shooter: you pilot a fighter plane, dodge enemies and blast your way through, very much in the spirit of the arcade shooters its author grew up with.

The controls betray the era: the plane is steered with the 4, 6, 8 and 2 keys on the numeric keypad, the spacebar fires, and the 5 key unleashes a special Thunder attack. Setiabudi never sold his game — he handed it out to schoolmates for free, floppy by floppy, so for a long time only his circle of friends knew it existed. It is a small miracle that the game survived at all.

Every Indonesian gaming fan knows David Setiabudi's name today: he went on to found the Divine Kids studio and is popularly dubbed the father of Indonesian game development. Siege Arm is effectively the prologue to a whole national gaming history — a modest after-school experiment that eventually grew into a career and an entire scene.

A neat detail: the game is preserved on the Internet Archive, including a version that runs directly in the browser — quite an honour for underground schoolwork from 1992. You can also play it right in your browser here on OldGame.cz.
