Heroes of Might and Magic II: Gold

Heroes of Might and Magic II: Gold is a 1998 compilation edition of the celebrated turn-based strategy game, released for PC under The 3DO Company. As the Gold label suggests, it bundles the second Heroes instalment together with its expansion content – a common late-nineties practice of re-issuing a successful strategy title as one complete package.

The core follows the series' established model: heroes travel across a map in turns, gathering resources, capturing mines and developing castle towns where new troops are recruited. When armies meet, the game switches to a gridded battlefield where units act in order of speed. That rhythm of exploration, building and battle is the foundation the whole franchise still rests on.

Heroes II ranks among the most respected turn-based games of its era, and the Gold edition preserves it in its most complete form. In the late nineties it was titles like this that proved turn-based design could hold its ground against the real-time strategy wave then dominating store shelves.

Visually the game relies on hand-drawn unit art and colourful, readable maps – no early 3D experiments that would age badly, which is a large part of why it still looks pleasant today.

Complete editions hold particular value for preservation: they gather content originally sold in pieces into a single whole, and tend to be the version players reach for first. With a turn-based strategy there is a further advantage – it plays as well now as at release, because turns do not hurry and rules do not age.
