Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade

Armageddon's Blade is the 1999 expansion to Heroes of Might and Magic III, developed by New World Computing. The third game remains, for a large share of players, the high point of the entire series, and this add-on belongs to the small category of expansions mentioned in the same breath as the game they extend. It brought new campaigns, new creatures and, most visibly, an additional faction organised around elemental themes.

Its most durable contribution, though, was the random map generator. That single feature moved the game's lifespan from dozens of hours to effectively unlimited. Instead of working through a fixed set of scenarios, players could generate maps to their own parameters — size, number of players, presence of the underground layer, resource density. For a turn-based strategy in which knowing the terrain confers an enormous advantage, this changed the experience fundamentally, because every session genuinely started from nothing.

The underlying systems are untouched, which is exactly right. Heroes moving turn by turn across the strategic map, resource and artefact collection, town development, and battles fought on a hex grid combine into something many later games have attempted to reproduce and few have approached. The artwork is hand-drawn at high resolution and has aged incomparably better than the real-time 3D of its contemporaries. Anyone who played the third game but never touched Armageddon's Blade has missed a substantial part of why it became a fixture that people still return to decades later.
