Sssnake

Data Age published Sssnake for the Atari 2600 in 1982, and it works as a textbook illustration of what console software looked like during the boom that immediately preceded the crash. The premise is elementary: you move a figure around the screen while snakes pursue you, and survival depends on outmanoeuvring them. Input is a joystick and one button, which was not a design choice so much as the hardware's ceiling.

The 2600 gave programmers almost nothing to work with. Memory was measured in dozens of bytes, the picture had to be assembled scanline by scanline in step with the television beam, and the number of movable objects was fixed by the chip itself. Every game for the machine is therefore partly an exercise in constraint management, and Sssnake does not hide it. The graphics are abstract, the audio minimal, but the loop communicates itself in seconds without a word of instruction.

Data Age was one of the smaller publishers that entered the market in 1982, when cartridge demand looked like it would grow indefinitely. The collapse arrived the following year and most of those companies vanished with it, which is why their releases now carry a collector's value that often exceeds their value as games.
