About the game

Sonic 3D Blast, released in 1996 for the Sega Mega Drive (and later the Saturn), was one of the last major Sonic outings on Sega's 16-bit hardware and a notable departure from the series formula. Developed by Traveller's Tales, it swapped the trademark side-scrolling speed for an isometric perspective, presenting the stages as pseudo-3D playfields you navigate at an angle. The core task involves rescuing little bird-like Flickies scattered through each level and delivering them to a goal, which slows the pace considerably compared to the classic games.

That shift divided players then and still does now. The isometric viewpoint makes precise movement trickier, and the deliberate collect-a-thon structure sits at odds with the momentum-driven thrills Sonic was built on. Still, it is a technically ambitious game for the Mega Drive, pushing the hardware with its rendered look and colourful zones. It stands as an interesting experiment from the twilight of the 16-bit era — not the fastest or the most beloved Sonic, but a memorable curiosity worth trying to see where the blue hedgehog headed before his full leap into 3D.
